Prioritizing James Island’s Environment

Each day, James Island loses more green space and trees. This is destroying the beauty of our beloved island and displacing wildlife. While we cannot change what has already happened, we can – and must – prioritize preservation moving forward.

As your Mayor, I will ensure that the Town of James Island:

Identifies and works to improve flood-prone areas in our neighborhoods and properties, making certain that new development makes proper drainage a priority.

Takes an aggressive approach to identifying green space that can be purchased using county greenbelt funds and/or hospitality funds to preserve and protect in perpetuity.

Maintains and improves our wonderful parks including Dock Street Park, Pinckney Park, and Brantley Park and enhances their appeal to residents.

Participates in and supports the planning process for the renovation of the SCDNR Fort Johnson complex and the state park to be established at the former Sisters of Charity convent/May Forest site.

Continues to be recognized as a “Tree City USA” by committing appropriate portions of our annual budget to tree care, tree plantings, and recognizing SC Arbor Day.

Continues to encourage residents and service organizations to keep our island clear of litter through quarterly Adopt-A-Highway community clean-up events.
